Gelato and Calories

Are you trying to lose a little weight? Are you also trying to forego indulgences such as cake and ice cream in order to not gain weight? Well, here’s something that you need not worry about: gelato. Yes, gelato- the creamy, rich, and decadent dessert that you have come to know and love. Unlike ice cream, gelato has far fewer calories and a lot less fat. In fact, when ice cream and gelato are compared to one another, a 100 gram (3.5 ounce) serving of gelato runs 140 – 170 calories, with 3.5 - 6 grams of fat and roughly 24 and 24 grams of sugar, while the same size serving of ice cream runs 230 - 275 calories, with 14 – 17 grams of fat. That means that a standard pint of ice cream, which has roughly 400 grams or 12 ounces, can total almost 1,000 calories. And custard-style ice cream can have even greater amounts of calories and fat!
If you really want to go skinny on gelato, try it with soy instead of milk: soy-based gelato usually has fewer than 150 calories, 3 – 4 grams of fat, and 24 grams of sugar per 100 gram (3.5 ounce) serving. Water-based gelato goes even further, with about 100 calories, no fat whatsoever, and about 20 grams of sugar per serving. For those on a no-sugar diet, gelato made with whole milk and a sweetener like Splenda® has about 90 calories and 10 grams of net carbohydrates.
So, are you still worried about gaining weight from eating gelato?
